Gas fireplace installation

Once you have determined what type and model of gas fireplace fits your needs, it’s time to begin installing your new source of heat. This needs to be done correctly, both for safety and efficiency reasons. If you wish to attempt gas fireplace installation yourself, or even just understand the process that your contractor will be using, here’s a few things to keep in mind.

All vented fireplaces need an exhaust system. The most popular direct vented models require two separate pipes, one for combustion air and one for exhausted waste air. The easiest way to accomplish gas fireplace installation is to run this system directly through an exterior wall that is next to the unit. If you live in an existing home, you will be cutting a hole through that wall that will accommodate the piping system. This will then need to be sealed with a heat resistant shield. This is designed to protect the framing and sheet rock material in the home’s structure from excessive exposure to the fireplace heat for safe operation. It is also possible to run the exhaust pipes up through the roof. However, this isn’t done as often for several reasons. First, the more pipe you need, the more expensive it will become. It’s also not ideal to have the air transfer travel that far when installing, as it is less efficient and can malfunction easier.

For a natural vented system, you will only need one exhaust pipe. This is usually installed up through the roof as the system relies on the natural process of heat rising to accomplish the venting process. This gas fireplace installation can run through an already present chimney system, but piping may be preferable to attach directly to the fireplace and pull efficiently through the chimney opening.

While, in theory, installing a vent free system is the most simple process of any of the choices, it can also have the most dangerous consequences if done incorrectly. Vent free systems exhaust into the home and all safety features must be used correctly for safe operation. If you do decide to install a vent free system yourself, follow all the instructions to the letter. It is also highly recommended to have a professional service inspect your work and verify that it was done properly.

Whether you or your contractor is doing the gas fireplace installation, you are more aware of what to expect during this process.
